Chemistry utilizes and contributes to all areas of the natural sciences. Progress in modern chemistry relies heavily on laboratory research, making use of a variety of instrumental and computational methods. With better information and scientific data available, the methods that scientists and theorists use to study biological systems are evolving.
At Webster University, chemistry majors engage in coursework in chemistry, physics and mathematics with many also taking courses in biology. The science courses include both lecture and laboratory components, preparing students to assume positions in academic, industrial and government laboratories. The BS in Chemistry is also an excellent starting point for a professional career in medicine, dentistry or one of the other health sciences. Other chemistry majors may choose to pursue a graduate degree in chemistry or enter a profession that utilizes a chemistry background.

- Most courses include an associated laboratory component where students gain hands-on experience that enriches and deepens their understanding. Laboratory experience is particularly useful when pursuing employment within the scientific community.
State of the Art Browning Hall
The chemistry program is housed in the new state-of-the-art Browning Hall, which includes four chemistry teaching labs, a chemistry research lab and an instrumentation room. In addition, this interdisciplinary science building also contains biology and physics laboratories. The department possesses a number of computational chemistry programs including GAMESS and the most recent version of Gaussian (Gaussian 16) the most popular and widely used computational program in chemistry.
Students have access to a variety of modern chemical instruments including FTIR (Perkin Elmer Frontier), UV-VIS-NIR (Perkin Elmer Lambda 750), UV-Vis (Perkin Elmer Bio Rad 10), NMR (Nanalysis NMR Ready 60e) and Fluorescence (ISS PC1) spectrometers. Other instruments include a UV photoreactor, a GC-FID (Agilent 6890), an HPLC (Agilent 1100), and a polarimeter (Steeg & Reuter). Chemistry students also have access to an array of biological instrumentation including PCR, flow cytometer, electrophoresis and ultracentrifuge equipment.

Senior Research Project
To complete this BS degree, each student conducts a semester-long senior research project with a faculty mentor. Students present their results to the university community with many presenting at outside research conferences and some publishing their results in professionally refereed journals.
